A graduate of Comstock High School where her father, Larry Pickett, was the athletic director for 32 years, Melanie attended Michigan State University where she played basketball. She earned her Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education and Biology in 1972, and later received her Master’s in Exercise Physiology in 1983.
Melanie taught, coached and served as an athletic administrator in the Lansing Public Schools for 33 years. Miller’s career began at Lansing’s Hill High School but moved on to Lansing Sexton High School. From 1974-1979, while teaching both Physical Education and Sciences courses, Melanie also coached girls’ basketball, volleyball and softball. During the next seven years she served as assistant athletic director and oversaw the female athletic program. She also coached tennis for two years. In 1987, Melanie became the athletic director where she remained until retirement in 2005.
