Sportscaster for 43 years all in the state of Michigan. Started career in 1981 at WJIM – TV in Lansing, moved to WJRT – TV in Flint as weekend sports anchor, moved to Detroit in 1987 and spent 17 years in that market for 3 major Detroit television stations. Moved back to Lansing in 2003 after being named Sports Director at WLNS – TV, then moved to WILX – TV in 2020 and was named Co-Sports Director in 2021.
Career has taken him all over the country—has covered 7 NCAA Basketball Final Fours, 3 NHL Stanley Cup Finals, 3 NBA Finals, 3 Super Bowls, 5 Rose Bowls and has covered the Masters in Augusta 3 times.
His career achievements include a Broadcast Emmy Award in 1991 and numerous United Press International, Associated Press and Michigan Association of Broadcasters Awards including best sportscast on multiple occasions.
Before he started his professional broadcast career, Fred operated the scoreboard message control for the Detroit Tigers from 1979 to 1986. Also worked as a statistician for the Lions during his college years.
Fred has also worked at no fewer than 12 radio stations during his four plus decade career, including a 4-year stint on the staff of WJR Radio in Detroit. Was a play-by-play voice for University of Michigan Basketball for 2 years at WJR.
He was inducted into the Central Michigan University Journalism Hall of Fame in 2018.
